quicknotes directed at a specific person

Hello all zoners!
I thought it would be a good idea to implement some kind of direct person quicknote facility. Um, what the hell you talking about. No problem! I'll explain.

Basicly in adition to writing your quicknote you'd have a combo box or something similar beside the edit field where you write your quicknote that would say, direct at: and list the people that are logged in at the time. If you select everyone, the quicknote would send as normal. But if you select a username, when your quicknote appears, instead of saying:
Kev
Hi friends!
Say that there was a username of example logged in. You picked example from the direct quicknote at... combo box. Because this username was chosen, instead of saying the quicknote above, it would say:
Kev (to example) Hi friends!

Obviously if you were sending a private quicknote to someone, you would not need to direct it at anyone.

Just an idea.

Thanks!

Kevin

Kevin, I'm afraid I'm totally missing your point here. Either can you be a little clearer, or can someone else explain what Kevin is driving at?

Hmm. Let's see. I'll try explain better. Note that I'm not trying to tell the CL's/Admins how to code this. It's just an example

When you send a quicknote to all users, assuming your public quicknotes are enabled, in adition to the send quicknote to: combo box , there will be a second combo box if the all users item is selected. It will say, direct quicknote at: and in that combo box will be displayed the people who are logged in at the moment. Now, the part I didn't think of was, if they have public quicknotes disabled, they're name obviously wouldn't show up in this list, because, they obviously don't want to receive public quicknotes, so why would their name be there?

Here's an example.
I see that Jeff is logged on. I select to send a quicknote to all users. Since I've selected all users, I want everyone to know I'm talking to jeff, kind of like, you're in a room, and you look at a certain person to speak with them. But everyone else can hear you since they're all in the same room with you. anyway, since I selected all users, the next combo box says, direct quicknote to: I'm going to choose Jeff from the list, tab again, type my quicknote, and click send. Since I selected Jeff in the combo box of people to direct my quicknote to, it will say something like:
Kev (to Jeff) I was talking to you, not Bill.

The reason for this is sometimes I see that people want to reply to someone's public quicknote but then you have someone later asking, what was that for. This way, you can direct the quicknote to the person you're talking to and everone will see you're talking to them.

I really hope this explains it better. If it doesn't get implementted, that's fine, just something I thought would be useful to have.

Kevin

wouldn't it be a lot easier to just say "jeff, hi how's it going?"
or "hey bob that's a great idea"
in other words, put the person's name in your public quicknote? no coding needed for that.

Yeah, I agree. If I'm answering a question asked in publics or responding to a particular public quicknote, I just put the person's name at the beginning of the quicknote. I see no need to have the admins do more coding, and really I don't think it's necessary.

Yeah, true. Again, it was just a suggestion.

That's what this board is for. However, I do think it would be a lot easier just to put the person's name in your quicknote.

sending messages privately is good enough for me. we don't need that extra feature

I agree. Just addressing the person you are speaking to by name should be good enough. No need for an extra feature like that. I've had peoplewhodon't know my first name just callme by my username or some variation of it which was fine by me.

I'd get confused with all the combo boxes, and which was for what. lol!

Kevin, thank you for clarifying your explanation. I get it now. However, I agree with the others here. I think it's easiest just to type the name, or some shortened form of the user name, in the public QN box if you want to show that you're addressing them. Other CL's may comment if they wish, but this is my opinion.
